Is Shield Internet worth it?

Shield is a low-cost, unlimited 5G/4G internet plan from the nonprofit Computers 4 People. Here is what it actually costs and includes, from their own pricing page.

What it costs

$14.89/mo billed monthly, or $13.00/mo — $156 billed yearly, a $22/year savings over the monthly rate.

No contract and no credit check either way, and you can cancel anytime. A referral link takes 5% off a new subscriber's rate.

Devices

Three ways to get online: a brand-new Franklin 4G Hotspot ($60 one-time, up to 4G LTE speeds, up to 10 devices, replaceable battery, about 10 hours of battery life), an open-box Jextream 5G Hotspot ($120 one-time, true 5G speeds, WiFi 6 dual band, up to 20 devices, 5,000 mAh battery), or bringing your own compatible 4G/5G device at no extra cost.

Shield also runs as Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) for a home router setup rather than a portable hotspot — same network, same service quality, different device and a separate verification/shipping/billing flow covered in Shield's own FAQ.

Coverage and data

Available in 49 states (not Alaska), plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Unlimited data — Shield advertises it as truly unlimited, not throttled after a cap.

Where the money goes

Computers 4 People states that 100% of Shield subscription profits fund computer donations through their nonprofit programs.

The National Digital Inclusion Alliance has recognized Shield as a best-rated low-cost internet plan, their highest tier.

Deciding

If you need unlimited mobile-friendly data with no contract and want your subscription to fund something beyond itself, Shield's pricing is competitive with other budget carriers. If you specifically need a fixed home connection, check the FWA option in their FAQ before assuming the portable hotspot plan is the right fit.
